12 years old Axel's typical school day(Days of confinement)
On the timeline, Axel is a child of twelve and going through his school day as a kid of the higher city from Here. In terms of names, Bielo is Axel's father, also First in command of the King's personal guard. Axel's friends are also to be his team mates in his future role (which they all know about. The children of Royal guards -if boys- are to be part of the Prince's guard, as per the bloodline edict). Those are Mateo, William, Liam and twins Maximus and Nicolai. Each will have a specific role in the guard. This short story helps me build on my characters profiles and have a better idea of what makes them 'real' and 'human'. I am currently working on the first book of 'A deck of cards' where my characters live in, in a town called Here.
'Put your books in your trays and get your things. Remember your test tomorrow.'
'Yes Teacher,' each boy in the classroom says in unison.
Axel tidies up his table, aware of the teacher's intense stare. He stays perfectly calm and unhurried, despite this feeling he has to run off with the others. With his father being so close to the King, Axel knows how people see him. His father explained all this to him last year. Axel still doesn't understand why his parents have not explained the same thing to his sister, Anissa. she doesn't understand fully why people behave a certain way around her, why they try to get invited to their house, why they enquire so often after their father's health. As the boy in the family, Axel understands the responsibility that falls on his shoulders.
Now the teacher walks up to him just as his last classmate leaves the room. The older man comes closer to lean against the desk in front of Axel, then says 'Axel, I've noticed that your work is... not at its best lately. I may need to speak with your father about this...'
'Can I ask what part of my work is lacking? My dad will want to know, you see.'
'Yes, yes of course. Well, hum, your writing is good but your reasoning is not deep enough. you've got a good understanding of problems and situations, but your solution solving is... you could improve.'
Axel stays impassive, knowing that no matter what his teacher says, he still need to show respect. Finally he takes his coat, puts it around his shoulders as he replies 'I will let my father know about those issues teacher. Do I need to tell him anything else?'
'Oh well, I think it would be better if I... if I speak to him directly.'
Axel nods.
'I understand but my father is a busy man. I can let him know. He'll come around, at some point.'
'But... but...'
Axel walks toward the door, then turns back to his teacher.
'I can't get you an audience wit the King, but whatever the issue is, you can go to Enforcement. That's their job.'
He leaves the room, feeling bad for the other man. This won't be the last time that he will get approached, but hopefully the message will be received. He will talk to his father about his work and there is no doubt in his mind that it will be checked. Axel doesn't mind the hard work he may need to put through after that particular talk; but if the teacher only puts accusations on his homework to get a chance to speak with his father, the man will not like the resulting conversation.
Heading toward the empty field behind the blacksmith shop, he grins when his friends wave him over. Mateo is sitting down already, his bracelet in hand and playing distractedly with the beads. The boy is the newest addition to their small group. Liam stands next to him, commenting on something in the book they are currently studying from. Axel walks over to Maximus who just finished his lunch and is now licking his fingers. In the distance, Nicolai, Maximus' twin, and William are going over some combat routine they've learnt last week. The new class started last month, and it's the most challenging one yet. Axel looks up at the tall man next to him.
'Who's winning?' he asks.
'Tie.' Max replies. 'They put each other on their asses twice already. Nico's got a weak point that Will's already pointed out. I reckon this class is gonna be fun.'
'Yeah. How's your sketch coming up?'
'Mmm. I'll see. It's just the first draft. Leo's a hard crafts-master.'
'You enjoy every minute of it.'
'Yup.' Maximus grins in that disarming way he has. 'You okay?'
'Yeah. Gotta talk to my dad.' Axel explains his conversation with the teacher.
'That's bull. You're the best in our class. He wants something.'
'We'll see. I'll speak with my dad.'
'You will?' Maximus looks at him as if he just saw a shifter or some other monster.
'Yeah.' Axel says with a shrug. 'If the teacher is saying that I'm lacking and it's true, I wanna know where. We'll see. And... your brother's down.'
Axel and Maximus walk over to the duo, now covered in mud and grinning like fools. Axel decides to put the earlier conversation out of his mind for now. Instead, he moves in front of William with purpose.
The fight is on.
